Safer Cities
by Ian Campbell, Perth City Centre Programme Manager
The Safer Cities Initiative, which works well in other cities, involves the setting up of a criminal database for Perth City Centre which is built up by information provided from participating businesses. Through protocols drawn up between the businesses, police and Perth City Centre Management an information exchange scheme can be implemented. This will include photographs and information on prolific criminals relating to Perth City Centre being distributed to participating scheme members.
Also on the agenda is pushing for criminal exclusions for the scheme on a BAN FROM ONE – BAN FROM ALL perspective and a meeting with the Procurator Fiscal and Sheriffs is on the agenda. Also civil exclusions on the same perspective will be issued by Perth City Centre Management on behalf of scheme members. Businesses are presently signing up to the initiative. The intention of the scheme is to exclude the criminals from the city centre or disrupt their activities through staff knowledge of
them. Window stickers, being designed at present, will be displayed by member businesses. Window stickers for Radiolink members are also under design.
Perth City Centre Pubwatch has now a constitution and the majority of pubs and clubs have joined. Initially the scheme will be looking for criminal exclusions on conviction on a BAN ONE - BAN ALL perspective in relation to serious crimes and drug dealing within member premises. Pubs and clubs have also been issued with respective signage to advertise what the scheme is promoting. In the future an information exchange scheme to the pubs and clubs and the introduction of a radiolink system may
be introduced.
A business crime and safety survey for Perth City Centre businesses has taken place and the results are being analysed. These results will dictate the development of future partnership initiatives.
Perth City Management in partnership with other agencies is also involved in the development of a Staff Awareness Guide To Drugs In Premises booklet and also the Get Home Safely Initiative.
