Good food made Smart!by Athole Murray Fleming
It wasn't too long ago that while leaving George Street in Perth to head over to the new concert hall that I stumbled upon The Smart Good Food Shop run by James and Eva Smart. Inside I discovered foods which were totally new to me, and from that moment I was hooked on Smart Good Food! Run by James and Eva Smart, both have had a very different career history. James was a civil engineer, having lived in Perth for many years. Eva a hotel manager, originally from the Netherlands. When they decided that they wanted to work together and were now ready for a new challenge, they used their passion for good food and wine as their inspiration, and The idea for a 'continental' delicatessen was born. Looking at various locations in Scotland, Perth stood out as an already attractive town with planned improvements. The position of the shop opposite the new concert hall made the decision to take on these premises easy. Having opened in August 2005 James and Eva's aim is to become a major asset to Perth, and when I visit with the family I think they are well on their way.
The range of food stocked varies from fresh antipasti, cheeses, meats, herbs and spices, sauces and pickles to wines, pastas, olive oils, chocolates and the most amazing liquorice, which I tried on my last visit…brilliant stuff! James and Eva also stock a range of 'own made' products, prepared on the premises, like oatcakes, relishes and chutneys, pies and terrines. Their latest addition is a selection of fresh fruit, vegetables and flowers which are displayed just outside the shop entrance. At lunchtime (and at other times too) James and Eva will serve freshly made baguettes and panini as well as freshly made soup and daily specials. The Smart Good Food Shop now has a party catering service where they provide a range of party platters for home entertaining and office platters for working lunches. Before I finish this article I must tell you that Eva's 'own made' pork pies are immense, fantastic and very good…get the idea? So, the next time you are walking around the concert hall area, pop over to the Smart Good Food Shop and try things out…. it is the 'difference' that makes this shop a delight.
