Advice to beat waste cost increases

by Jim Renton Development & Marketing Officer

Jim Renton

Perth & Kinross Council Commercial Waste Team are redoubling their efforts to promote the reduce, reuse, recycle message to businesses to help them minimise the impact of rising waste disposal costs.

Increases in landfill tax and waste disposal costs, along with inflation rises, meant that there was an 19% increase in general waste disposal charges as of April 1st .

Despite this it has never been so easy for your business to find alternatives to general waste disposal. A dedicated team of officers is available to provide advice and assistance on managing your waste in a cost effective way.

Centred on the principles of reducing, reusing and recycling waste instead of disposing of it to landfill, better waste management can help your business to substantially reduce the impact of these cost increases.

Recyclable materials are not subject to landfill tax or increases in waste disposal charges so it makes sense for your business to make use of the comprehensive services and free support that is available. Perth & Kinross Council, in partnership with other local organisations, can offer a range of recycling services including cardboard, cans, glass, green waste and paper collections.

Additionally our waste minimisation officer can advise you on changes your business can make to further reduce the amount of general waste you produce and on other outlets for more specialist recyclable wastes.

Waste costs will continue to rise due to escalating landfill tax and increasing landfill disposal charges. Scotland has historically tolerated a 'dig and dump' culture but in recent years householders and businesses have started to realise the importance of disposing of their waste in a sustainable way.

Already over 1300 businesses in Perth and Kinross are reducing, reusing and recycling their waste in a number of ways and have seen the benefits of being more responsible for what the waste they produce.
